Just as Fall turns into Winter… winners rotate. It is a natural occurrence. One that is not always popular. I am very used to the term because of my profession. We say it all the time to prepare ourselves for the rotation in the financial markets. We all know eventually one sector falls out of favor and another… for however long becomes the next darling of Wall Street. After this election I wanted to give the world time to stop and think, catch it’s breath and maybe just calm down a bit. It has been as frustrating for me as it has for everyone else. Some how I just new that change was coming. There was just too much angst in the air. Whenever there is stress and pain to an extreme I guarantee you change is coming. In life, in the stock market and in the world for that matter.
We all know the one thing in life we can count on is change. The funny thing is when it happens most people seem caught off guard like it is a big surprise. Managing money for almost thirty years has prepared me more than anything to understand change and the the concept that winners rotate. Sometimes quickly and sometimes not. I like to think of it this way. The same team does not win the Super Bowl every year. It is the same in NBA, PGA and MBA . In the stock market the same sectors do not grab all the money all the time. Didn’t we all just know that Tiger Woods would not stay on top? He was on such a strong winning streak that he got credited for bringing back the game of golf. Then we know what happened. He self sabotaged and was bombarded by the press for his personal life. His game fell apart. Winners rotate.
When the election was happening and people were just plain nasty with their opinions I kept my mouth shut for the most part. It is not that I hate confrontation, I just wanted to sit back and watch it all play out. Boy did it ever play out. Change caught the world by surprise. Except those that had strong conviction. In everything in life you will see that sometimes you win and sometimes you loose. Sometimes it love, sometimes it sports and sometimes it is politics. It would unnatural for the same team to win every single time. It would be as unnatural as not maturing. When we truly accept change in parts of our life that we can not control… life flows much easier. It is like denying the truth when we pretend our way is the best and only way from here to eternity. So let’s put the election to bed. It is time to focus on the road ahead. Whether you like it not the changes are taking place in your government, in your family and in you. No one or situation stays the same forever. Period. Complacency serves no one forever. Life would become so boring if it did. Understand that you can not control the outcome of everything that affects your life and you have won half the battle.
The next time your favorite team loses remember …winners rotate. Everyone gets to shine some of the time, just not all of the time. Some of the people I most admire and have been my greatest teachers started to spew venom after the election. This was so enlightening for me. These are the teachers that told me everyone has a dark side. These are the spiritual gurus to the masses, and yet something as universal as change was not something they could grasp. It was mind blowing. To be honest a bit disappointing as well. We are all better than the media played us to be. It does not matter what side of the fence you are on… the only control you have is the way you respond to it. No more name calling and negativity. These are first world problems. Be grateful to live in a democratic society where everyone has the opportunity to vote. Respond with best of intention. Be a winner. Help where you can help. As my mother always said, “If you can not say something NICE, then say nothing at all!” She really is smart after all.
Who is better than You??? Nobody
This is true in the writing world as well. Subgenres rise and fall in popularity. So, too, do your fortunes as a writer. You might be barely scraping by one day and a bestselling author the next. It doesn’t do any good to envy the person who is more successful. Instead, you should support them and cheer their efforts. It might be you next time, and what goes around comes around.
